Regional ‘homecoming’ for minister
Minister Ben Franklin’s visit to Deniliquin on Saturday to announce Creative Capital funding was not his first.
In addressing the crowd at South West Music, Mr Franklin revealed he came to Deniliquin to compete in a school competition some years ago.
The politician grew up in Barham, where his parents were teachers.
“I am so excited to be here ... it genuinely feels like a homecoming,” Mr Franklin said.
“One of the last times I was here (in Deniliquin) was with a public speaking competition.
“I was involved in a lot of music at Barham too - there’s something about music that cements people.”
Register your burns
Deniliquin firefighters are again reminding everyone that any burns must be registered with the relevant authority.
It is a legal requirement to register and notify the authorities of your burn, regardless of what you are burning and whether it is on a rural property or within the town limits.
You must also abide by certain conditions, which means never leaving the burn unattended.
The reminder comes after both Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW and the Mid Murray Rural Fire Service were called to planned burns in the past few days.
The RFS was asked to respond to a small burn which got away, allegedly because the fire was not being monitored at the time.
On Thursday evening, about 8.47pm, Deni FRNSW firefighters were called to a Wellington St home in Deniliquin on reports of a blaze.
On arrival, firefighters found cardboard boxes and other papers being burned.
To register a burn with the RFS, go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify. This must be completed at least 24 hours before burning.
For more information on burning approvals within the Deniliquin town limits, contact Captain Marty Smith on 0438 477 384.
