The group has been overwhelmed with feedback from those in need, the general community and further organisations who are able to aid, with the point of the discussion group to create a central point for those who are needing assistance to know where to turn.
An integral point of the meeting held last week was for each organisation to listen to what those who are suffering’s needs actually are.
Everyone assumes the homeless need a warm bed and roof over their head where some would really just rather a shower and food etc. A bed isn’t always what they need.
Moira Shire General Manager Community Sally Rice shared the research council have conducted as well as answering questions from attendees about permits and grant applications.
“After discussions at the last meeting about the possible purchase of a food van, Council staff are happy to look at certain sites to set up a van if it can be purchased but planning permits will depend on certain sites,” Ms Rice said.
“Some do not need them, others do.
“Moira Shire has looked into the costing of showering and laundry buses however these are quite expensive.
“We have also looked into funding with grants available at different levels to assist individuals or organisations, which we can also help with.”
Yarrawonga Police Detective Senior Constable Bree George also filled in the group on further developments from Police with some good news arising.
“Police conduct regular visits down to the river or where people have set up shelter etc,” Snr Constable George said.
“But after the last meeting where it was mentioned that a family was living rough between Yarrawonga and Bundalong, Police have conducted further searches and they have not encountered any families or large groups living on the river.”
Co-ordinator of the original group that inspired the organisation discussion group, Amber Gower said that the original group have maintained contact with campers at the Yarrawonga Common and have provided them with the bare necessities when they have been needed.
“Sun Country Foods have said they will help with food if a food van can be purchased,” Ms Gower said.
Representatives of Uniting Church also disclosed the assistance they currently provide with a supply of dignity bags which have toiletries and the bare necessities always available for those who need them.
This Friday, Moira Shire Council will also be hosting a round table discussion with local organisations to establish what can be done from a council and local government level to assist these organisations and individuals.
