The 13-year-old Cobram Anglican Grammar School student was commended for his entry in the youth short story competition.
His adventurous tale involving an unwell character, the Grim Reaper and ruby heist attracted the interest of the judges in the prestigious Shepparton-based competition.
“It’s about a character who is in bed with a fever and is visited by the Grim Reaper,” Cedric said.
“He gets sent to the afterlife and then he’s involved in a heist of a precious ruby in the afterlife.
“I enjoy reading books about action and thought it would good to write one.”
Cedric said his mum, Jacqueline, dad, Derrick, sister, Cadence, and teacher, Chris Hargreaves, had all helped him with his writing, which he was thinking about as a possible career choice one day.
“I’ll keep trying,” he said.
The Furphy Literary Award is inspired by Joseph Furphy, of the Furphy foundary family. Using the pseudonym “Tom Collins”, he was the author of Such is Life.
The award has prizes for junior, youth and open entrants in short story and poetry competitions.
