The Apprentice of the Year award has been created this year to celebrate and honour the dedication of talented apprentices across the region.
Sponsoring the inaugural award is Moama tanker giant Byford Equipment, which has a long-running history with apprentices.
Founder Gary Byford began his journey as an apprentice boiler maker, a foundation that shaped not only his career but transformed Byford Equipment into the successful business it is today.
General manager Belinda Byford said the family-owned business wanted to throw its support behind an award that it was passionate about.
“We know firsthand that when someone is given the right opportunity, works hard and puts everything into what they do, they can achieve incredible things,” she said.
“Supporting this award is our way of recognising and encouraging young people who are starting out in their careers and helping ensure the future of skilled trades and manufacturing remains strong in our region.”
St Joseph’s work-related skills educator Ben Hearn said the nomination process offered employers a wonderful opportunity to view their apprentices with fresh perspective.
“I think it promotes a prototype for young people to aspire to … young people and employers can look at candidates and understand a little bit about that person’s journey and how they’ve succeeded,” he said.
Mr Hearn said he hoped this could change perceptions of apprenticeships from being an alternative pathway to one with equal value to university education.
He said it would also showcase businesses that supported the young people in their community.
“Ideally, it will really showcase apprentices and apprenticeships businesses as a combination, not just the separate entities,” Mr Hearn said.
Whether honouring a quiet achiever on the shop floor or a standout star in the office, the Campaspe Murray Business Awards are a chance to put local excellence on the map.
