Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre and Hume Riverina Community Legal Service organised a free wills clinic as a part of the Carers Week 2019 celebrations, held on October 16.
Yarkuwa chair Jeanette Crew said three Gilbert + Tobin lawyers provided their services for free to help the aboriginal community develop their wills.
“The clinic builds on work previously done by the New South Wales Trustee and Guardian in developing the ‘Taking Care of Business – Planning Ahead for Aboriginal People in NSW’ handbook, which provides people with information about Power of Attorney, Enduring Guardian and making a will as well as the ‘Aboriginal Wills Handbook – a practical guide to making culturally appropriate wills for Aboriginal people’,” Mrs Crew said.
“Following the information session, for the remainder of the day, there was back-to-back appointments with 21 local Aboriginal community members taking the opportunity to have their Will developed.”
A free lunch and refreshments were supplied for people to enjoy throughout the day.
“Feedback from the day included how glad people were that they got their wills developed and they recognised the importance of making decisions about their estates for their children and family members,” Mrs Crew said.
“The participants stated that it was a worthwhile experience and gave them an opportunity to consider matters they may not have considered before.”
