ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
It’s the simple pleasures in life that are important to us individually, collectively as a community and we have learnt in the last 18 months or more just how important they are and how quickly they can be taken away from us.
Time with loved ones, friends and families, community and the support, love, comfort and trust that we enjoy in our daily lives was stripped away by a virus that most had never heard of or ever contemplated as being something that would be part of or play a huge role in our life.
But it has, it did and will continue to do for an unknown time to come and we must, we will prevail.
That is why sport in the community is such an important commodity (a useful or valuable thing).
Like water is to our survival, sport in all its forms, brings thousands of us together and teaches us to be more caring, more like minded, more community minded so that we may lead better lives together.
That is it in its simplest form and we don’t really need to get any more complicated than that.
If we achieve those goals we are way out in front.
The wonderful club is split, as far as membership is concerned, between the two states Vic/NSW, separated by the beautiful stretch of water of Lake Mulwala, which is one of the great attractions of living where we do and it has been doubly hard for us to get together to enjoy our chosen sport.
How good was it to be able to gather as lawn bowlers and have the opportunity to get together on the greens this week for the first time in many months.
So much laughter, personal ‘digs’ and banter, warm greetings with huge smiles and just so much pleasure enjoying each other’s company that the bowling almost became the secondary reason that we had gathered together on Tuesday, September 28.
Almost. No matter what level of bowls we play at, there is a competitive nature in all of us that wants to win.
Win for our side, win for our teammates and win for ourselves.
Otherwise, we would play the game and not go to all that expense of purchasing scoreboards. The will is there and we want it. We will do it fairly, we will do it with respect to our opposition and we will do it with respect to the game itself.
And so, this competitive nature came out in all of us once we stepped onto the green after a warm welcome from our President Graeme Arnold.
Bit like crossing the white line (‘white line fever’) really as the old footy saying goes.
With around 30 players taking part in the day’s activities there was some great bowls played considering the lack of practice over a long period of time.
The rusty bits will be eliminated (hopefully) with many more practice sessions to come.
The greens are picture perfect and playing extremely well thanks to the efforts of the exceptional Greens Keeper Gary (Gazzman) Parker and the work he had put into their upkeep under very difficult and limited circumstances.
And the new lines are great mate.
The club must thank Jan Morton, Cliff Morton and Jodi Powell and the many members who arrive early to help with the set up and tear down at the end of the day.
Special thankyou to all who participated.
Winners on the day were: Peter Humphreys (Skip), Loris Lochhead (2nd) and Pam Lefevre (Lead). Runners Up were: Graeme Arnold (Skip), Daryl Richmond (2nd) and Russell Cook (Lead).
Saturday, October 2
Another great day of social bowls/bowls practice activities where the club warmly welcomed back Nola Mongor after a 12 month hiatus from the game. The club also welcomed new members Fred Brown, Kim Lefevre, Liz Murdoch and John Lefevre who will be great additions to the strength of the club and hopefully the success over a long period of time.
Liz of course joins hubby James (Jim) and the Lefevre dynasty, an extremely talented and well-known family of bowlers is almost complete.
Cards were fanned and winners and runners up received bowls cloths and toucher spray in preparation for the coming season.
Vale – Lance ‘Toosie’ Smith
President Graeme Arnold and members are saddened by the recent passing of esteemed member ‘Toosie’ Smith a much loved and respected member.
We would like to acknowledge the contribution Toosie made to the club during his time with ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls.
We send our condolences and love to his family. RESPECT.
Coming Up
Saturday, Oct 9 – Pennant Practice at 1.00pm.
Sunday, Oct 10 – Ladies and Men’s Singles Club Championship Matches at 10.00am.
Tuesday, Oct 12 – Social Bowls at 10.00am.
YMGCR Bowls
On a cold and miserable day, 24 brave bowlers tackled the Wednesday Social bowls and on this rare occasion there was only one two game winner and they were Doddy Dodman and one new bowler in Denise Trubiano.
Runners up were Ross Lloyd and Vicki Withers, jackpot failed to go off and the lucky number was won by Don Tipping.
Still the weather wasn’t looking that good again but 48 bowlers turned up for the popular Friday game. Winners were Robyn Moore and Jim Conway and the runners up were Normie Winderbank and his pocket rocket in Barb Tennyson.
Consolation prizes went to Andy Lefevre and Garry Presnell and the other combo off Ross Lloyd and Vicki Withers.
