French finalist Thiem out of Halle event

By AAP Newswire

French Open finalist Dominic Thiem has withdrawn from the grass-court tournament in Halle, Germany, which starts next week in the lead-up to Wimbledon.

The 25-year-old Austrian, who lost a second-successive Roland Garros final on clay last Sunday to Rafael Nadal, cited mental exhaustion.

"I would have liked to have started in Halle because it is always a fantastic tournament week in the season," organisers quoted Thiem as saying.

Japan's Kei Nishikori had already pulled out of the event, meaning American Taylor Fritz and Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia-Herzegovina might be added to the 32-strong field.

Wimbledon will run from July 1-15.
