The Bombers kept their head above water in a bid for finals action with a 13-goal victory over regional rivals Lockington-Bamawm United in the Heathcote District Netball League on Saturday.
Despite trailing early in the contest, Leitchy-Gunny’s consistency paid dividends as they broke away from their hosts in the second half.
‘‘Our goal was to put together four strong quarters because we have only played in patches recently,’’ coach Sammi Drover said.
‘‘Getting a win when your back is against the wall does wonders for your confidence. Hopefully we can use the momentum to push on and play finals.
‘‘A few results need to go our way but we’re really confident of giving the other teams a fright.’’
When the visitors needed someone to help swing momentum their way, goal attack Kaitlyn Wishart stood tall according to captain Kate Donehue.
In the opening half, Wishart created several key chances for her side and made the most of her own opportunities inside the ring.
‘‘Kaitlyn led the response which we had been asking for,’’ Donehue said.
‘‘Her energy was outstanding especially in the first two quarters and everyone just fed off it. Like all of us, she probably had a few down weeks and needed to get some confidence back.
‘‘It was great to see Kaitlyn perform in such a manner.’’
On the other side of the fence are LBU who remain at the foot of the Heathcote District ladder.
And while every loss hurts, one against their rivals stings that little bit more.
‘‘You always want to get one up over your rival,’’ coach Rylea Cuttriss said.
‘‘Losing to them twice in a year can be tough to swallow. Unfortunately we just weren’t able to capitalise on the turnovers we caused.’’
While it was another frustrating result for the Cats, Cuttriss still took plenty of positives away from the performance.
‘‘Lynsey Dobson excelled after being switched to defence,’’ she said.
‘‘Her pressure forced the opposition into several mistakes which was really pleasing. And we decided to move Stacy Bacon into centre and she played the role to a tee.
‘‘It has certainly given me something to think about moving forward.’’
LBU will now enjoy a week off after their round 14 clash against White Hills was played as a season opener.
Meanwhile, Leitchy-Gunny will welcome Heathcote as they aim to keep their finals hopes alive.
