The Tigers did exactly that on Saturday as they stormed to a 113-point victory over a disappointing Shepparton United in the Goulburn Valley League.
Stroobants has spent the season in the VFL with Coburg, but a bye for the Lions saw him switch the red sash for a yellow one.
His presence made an immediate impact as he single handedly outscored United with eight goals of his own.
‘‘We couldn’t have asked for a better return from Steve,’’ coach James Flaherty said.
‘‘He looked really sharp and our ball movement rewarded him.
‘‘Having a player of his experience is vital.
‘‘As a club, we’re hoping to have as much access as possible to him for the rest of the year.
‘‘But we also want to see him keep playing well for Coburg.’’
Rochester were well on their way to victory at quarter-time, as a five-goal to one opening term had United on the back foot.
The most pleasing aspect for Flaherty was that his side took their chances in front of goal for the second week running.
‘‘Our composure forward of centre has been much better in the games we have won,’’ he said.
‘‘We’re lowering our eyes instead of bombing away and making it easier for opposition defenders.
‘‘The forwards are thriving on the better ball movement.’’
As the Tigers began to extend their lead, United elected to throw men behind the ball — a move which Flaherty counteracted by shifting Hamish Hooppell forward.
It proved to be a major win as Hooppell kicked three goals of his own.
‘‘Hamish has shown us that he can get it done at both ends of the ground,’’ Flaherty said.
‘‘He made their loose man accountable and became dangerous inside 50.’’
Following the interleague break, Rochester will face two season defining games against Benalla and Shepparton Bears.
If they can claim two victories, they will be right back into the finals conversation.
‘‘We’ve got a massive chance to set ourselves up for the rest of the year,’’ Flaherty said.
‘‘Not many people will be tipping us but we have the momentum.
‘‘We need to keep riding our wave of confidence.’’
