What better way to do it than with some of the best footy you’ve played all year.
That’s what Lockington-Bamawm United did against Colbinabbin in the Heathcote District Football League on Good Friday.
The Cats raced out of the blocks, kicking nine goals to three as they looked set for a big victory.
‘‘It was the best we have moved the ball all year,’’ coach Kahl Oliver said.
‘‘But the most pleasing aspect was that we took our chances.’’
Despite singing the praises of his players at the first change, it was a much different message at half-time.
Suddenly, the game was well and truly back in the balance as the Hoppers worked the margin back to 10 points.
‘‘We took our foot off the accelerator when we shouldn’t have,’’ Oliver said.
‘‘In parts we probably went away from what we did so well early in the game.
‘‘Credit to Colbo for the way they performed, but we should have tried to wrestle back momentum.’’
Oliver’s message certainly got through as LBU got the game back on their terms in the second half, kicking away to win by 36 points.
That margin was helped by the performance of Thomas Leech who kicked six goals, as another forward bobbed up to kick a bag.
‘‘He really deserved that reward,’’ Oliver explained.
‘‘He’s had a big off-season and got himself super fit.
‘‘Last season he was one of our bigger focal points, but with the options we’ve got down there it’s a matter of who.
‘‘To create opportunities in different ways was key to his performance.’’
Now with three straight wins to start their season, LBU look primed to challenge at the pointy end of the season.
But with challenges against last season’s two grand finalists still to come, Oliver isn’t looking too far ahead. ‘‘We’re really pleased with how things have started, but we still have a lot to do,’’ he said.
‘‘Like every club we want to be the best. If we continue to improve, there is no reason to say we can’t.’’
LBU targeted winning their first four games of the season and they will get the opportunity to do that when they host Huntly on Saturday.
