The section one final between second and third place came down to the final set in a nail-biting finish.
Going into the last two sets on even games and sets, the Peacocks’ Chloe Whitfield and Shannyn Nicholl defeated Herons’ Christine Fuller and Helen Ingram to go into the last set leading by three games.
Herons Michelle Stone and Monica Brereton took a strong lead against Peacocks Naomi Bessell and Jenny Holt in the last set of the day, up 5-2 and serving, but the Peacocks stood tall and came back to only lose 6-4, helping their team to a one-game win and through to the 2019 grand final.
The other game saw top of the table Rosellas, led by Mel Haines, far too strong for fourth placed Kookaburras, taking an early lead and holding it for most of the day.
Kookaburras’ Bev Seddon played tremendously, winning two of her sets 6-1, with captain Sherryn Pederson and with Lauren Coghill, but it just wasn’t enough on the day and the Rosellas were victorious in the end by seven games and two sets, to take the other semi-final out.
Good luck to both the Peacocks and Rosellas in the section one grand final.
Section 2 results: Toucans 3/27 def Pelicans 3/25, Magpies 4/33 def Wrens 2/26
A place in the Elmore section two grand final awaits the two teams that finished the year in third and fourth position on the ladder.
The Toucans, led by Julie Leahy, scraped through by two games to defeat the Pelicans who were without their captain Merrilyn O’Brien.
Although down by seven games after four sets, the Toucans had an amazing last two sets to claw their way back and become victorious.
They will meet the Magpies who had a seven game win over the Wrens, the ladder leaders for most of the season.
The Magpies, who have been without their captain Glennis Carson for several weeks, were led by fill-in Heather Hayes.
Hayes’ baseline rallying and Robyn Merritt’s work at the net was instrumental in getting the team across the line.
Both finalists will have full line up for a shot at the grand final.
