The program, more affectionately known as ‘Little Chevies’, allows the soon-to-be prep students to learn skills prior to starting school, but it’s not about Maths and English.
‘‘It’s for students who are looking at joining us in 2020 and the idea of the program is to support the students and their families as they make the transition from preschool into the school setting,’’OLSH Principal Elizabeth Trewick said.
Children learn the routines of a school and how they’re different to a preschool.
‘‘So lining up outside the classroom and the expectations that come with that. It could even be as simple as teaching them that they need to put their hand up to ask before they go to the toilet,’’ Mrs Trewick said.
‘‘It’s also a chance for us to get an idea of how we can best support the child and the family. If we get to know them six months before they start school, we’re six months ahead of ourselves in support we can provide for the families and for the children.’’
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School seeks to educate students to be self-aware, compassionate, collaborative and courageous. OLSH is a Child Safe School and promotes the care, safety, wellbeing and inclusion of all students.
‘‘We make a commitment that children will learn, they will be challenged and nurtured as partners in their education,’’ she said.
‘‘We make a promise that they will be happy most of the time they attend here.’’
The program will run every Friday from 9am.
