On May 10 the local SES unit came together with the Victorian SES to be put to the test in a number of rescue drills.
Rochester SES controller Judith Gledhill said having a trained SES unit is vital for Rochester and the surrounding community.
‘‘There are accredited SES units in Echuca, Shepparton and other surrounding places. But if there wasn’t an accredited unit in Rochester for road crashes, there would be a big area on the map and it would take a long time for any other unit to make it to an accident in that area,’’ she said.
On the night, the volunteers demonstrated a high standard of capability, equipment and training in road-crash rescue.
The team worked under real-life accident conditions as they showed their accreditors how they would handle situations such as pulling trapped victims from cars.
Ms Gledhill said the hard-working members are always looking to add more to their ranks.
‘‘Our members are so dedicated to what they do and we would love to see more people joining us,’’ Ms Gledhill said.
‘‘People come and go for good reasons and we’re always looking for new team members.’’
