The Rochester Bowls Club was filled to the brim with more than 100 Lions past and present as well as interested locals and special guests.
The Rochester Lions Club was sponsored by the Echuca Lions Club and chartered on April 16, 1969 with 22 members at the time.
From then on, the group has been a vibrant club that has been serving the community to the best of their abilities.
Many of their early projects included the Lions Park (Frog Park) toilet block, the installation of barbecues around the community, hosting social nights, manual wood splitting and so many more.
The night was a huge success, according to Lions Club board member Bob Knight.
‘‘It was a really nice night and everything went really well,’’ he said.
‘‘We had quite a few members back and quite a few visitors from other clubs and the surrounding communities.’’
Current District Governor Judy Kerrow and local Campaspe Shire councillor Leigh Wilson attended the special event and along with other guests were treated to a delicious dinner as well as cake made by the Rochester Bakery.
For Mr Knight and a lot of others in the community, the Lions Club is a great asset to the local area.
‘‘Being part of the Lions Club means you get to be a part of the community and I think that’s why it’s so important to keep the club going,’’ he said.
‘‘Everything we do is for the community and it’s wonderful to help out where we can.’’
Sam Watkins was recognised and awarded the prestigious Chris August award for her outstanding service to the Lions Club and the community.
‘‘Sam’s work, particularly on our museum project, has been invaluable and her award has been very well earned,’’ Bob said.
‘‘She just knows how to get things organised and sorted and we don’t know what we would do without her.’’
The Rochester Lions Club is always ready to welcome new members, so if anyone would be interested please contact Bob Knight on 0438 843 444.
