Rochester and Elmore District Health Service’s (REDHS) health promotion officer Crystie Ballard approached Rochester Secondary College seeking assistance to add some pizzazz to an artwork that was started at the Lockington Family Wellbeing Day on March 24.
“The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness about how life is shaped by the choices you make and what everyday choices, such as being kind to one another or looking out for yourself, your friends or your family can lead to a positive outcome,” Miss Ballard said.
Year 7 Visual Arts students, supported by art teacher Meg Doller, were eager to help, applying their developing painting and colour theory skills to the task.
‘‘Opportunities to make a creative contribution to our community are exciting for our students. This particular opportunity enables students to publicly exhibit work — in this case a collaborative artwork — which is an element of the Visual Arts curriculum,’’ Ms Doller said.
The purpose of the artwork was to support the Lockington Youth Action Group’s Good Choices, Great Life campaign launch, during which members of the Lockington community added creative response to the question, ‘What are good life choices?’.
Many of the students were happy with their contributions and the project itself.
“I loved the theme, as it encourages children to make positive choices in their lives,’’ Charlie Peacock said.
“I hope the Lockington community like the finished artwork, it was fun to work on with my friends,” Jayde Ballinger said.
The canvas will be on display in a shop window in town.
