Rochester dance school set to light up the stage

By Kimberley Price

FOR the past 24 years, Vikki Thomas has been the matriarch behind Anton Lee Theatrical Dance Company.

Once again, she is the curator behind this Saturday’s dazzling end of year concert.

With all of her 25 students aged 4-18 taking to the CVC stage at 2pm and 7pm on Sunday, Vikki will be enjoying the performance as much as the audience as she watches yet another year of long hard work for her students, and herself, pay off.

‘‘We’ve been working on this concert for the past 15 weeks,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s a mixture of all the styles we teach; classical ballet, jazz and tap.

‘‘There’s a range of music used which spans almost 100 years.

‘‘There’s musical theatre, 70s hits, disco and current chart toppers so everyone will be pleased.’’

While Anton Lee Dance follows the exam syllabus, the students do not partake in gruelling exams throughout the year. Instead, the young dancers perform in different competitions and work incredibly hard on their final showcase.

‘‘We have a performance team of five dancers who have been zipping around the state and have been very successful this year,’’ Vikki said.

‘‘One of the pieces the team will be performing is called The River Flows In You, which is a tribute to a local lady who was a previous student of ours who had a stillborn baby.

‘‘This moving piece has been performed by the team before, but this weekend it will be the last time it is danced.’’

With all the students gearing up for the concert with numerous full make-up and hair rehearsals and practices scheduled at any available time, the Anton Lee Dance final performance is set to be spectacular.

Tickets will be available on the door 45 minutes before the show is set to begin.

The Anton Lee Theatrical Dance Company’s concert will be held on Sunday, December 9 at 2pm followed by a night performance at 7pm. Tickets are available at the door: adults $30, concession $20 and children $10.
