The Tatura Urban Fire Brigade has taken out the B-section title at the 134th Urban Senior State Championships in Bendigo over the recent long weekend.

Held at Weeroona Oval from March 11 to 13, the competition challenged volunteer CFA teams and individuals from around the state in wet and dry events.

The Tatura team, made up of eight competitors who have mostly come through the junior ranks, came home with three wins, a second, a third, a fourth and two fifths, with one of the wins breaking a six-year record in the Y-coupling ladder eights event.

Tatura brigade coach Darren Rennie said it was a great result.

‘‘I thought we would be competitive but to come away with what we did from the weekend was great,’’ he said.

Tatura was up against 60 teams, including four from Western Australia and one from New Zealand, and the small brigade was too good for its B-section rivals as it took out the section by 30 points (75 points to 45) ahead of Benalla, which finished second.

Tatura even finished equal second in the wet events, beaten only by A-section and 2017 champion brigade winner Maryvale (88 points).

Bendigo district championship committee spokesperson Wayne Pattison said the weekend had been successful.

‘‘There were several records broken during the three days and there was some excellent running that the guys had trained for,’’ he said.

Mr Rennie said the Tatura brigade trained twice a week with competitions held on Sundays throughout the season, leading up to the grand final event held on the Labour Day long weekend each year.

Each competitor took home a commemorative medal from the event, which marked the 30th year Bendigo has hosted the championships.
