WA Premier Mark McGowan has defended leading a delegation to Asia in a trip costing $250,000.

Western Australia's premier has defended spending more than $250,000 leading a delegation to China and Japan last year, saying it was a worthwhile trip to promote the state and secure jobs.

The delegation of 40 included Education Minister Sue Ellery, Tourism Minister Paul Papalia, vice-chancellors, chief executives, tourism operators, medium-sized businesses and private college operators.

"They got access that they've never had before. We met with major airlines, government representatives, tourism providers (and) companies that provide support to foreign students," Premier Mark McGowan told reporters on Wednesday.
