Dead corellas were found to be poisoned in Rochester last month. DELWP are investigating.

IN A sick act of animal cruelty, corellas have been found poisoned in Rochester.

Locals made the grisly find last month and the alarm was raised with authorities due to the number of birds found.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) responded to the reports and found 37 birds dead.

Forest and wildlife officer Brady Childs said they were collected within a 1.5km strip and sent for testing to determine the cause of death.

‘‘The results of necropsies (animal autopsies) on several of the birds indicates they were likely poisoned,’’ he said.

‘‘Samples from the birds are being sent for further analysis.

‘‘If you have any information about these corella deaths please call Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or DELWP customer service centre on 136 186. Calls can be made anonymously.’’

Mr Childs said corellas are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. ‘‘It is illegal to disturb or destroy protected wildlife without a permit,’’ he said.
