MAWSONS Concrete and Quarries has been awarded a contract to move 180,000 tonnes of railway ballast to Melbourne.
Locals may have noticed an increase in activity on the train lines, with carriages loaded every week. It’s the first time Mawsons has used rail from Rochester to ship to Melbourne in 10 years.
Mawsons’ Jim McInerney said rail transport was quicker and more cost effective than trucks for moving railway ballast.
“Some of it is still being taken by road to areas like Sunbury and Wallan where the train isn’t as effective.
“But it’s all been working well. Melbourne is experiencing a boom at the moment so it’s good Rochy can contribute to that.”
