THE SECOND season of the TAC Cup female program has a local feel.
The Bendigo Pioneers now have Lockington junior Sharmaine Reilly on their list.
Sharmaine’s football journey started with Auskick in Lockington.
From there, she went on to play two seasons of football for the Lockington-Bamawm United under 14 boys team in 2015 and 2016.
During her first season, she was awarded best first year player and then finished runner-up in the best and fairest in her second year.
Sharmaine wasn’t able to continue playing for the LBU under 14 boys so she looked elsewhere to continue with her football journey.
She played a season for the under 18 Echuca youth girls team in 2017 where she was awarded best team player.
She was also the highest polling Echuca youth girls player in the league best and fairest vote count.
Not long after the 2017 Echuca youth girls season came to an end, her coach selected her to try out for the 2017 girls Under 16 V/Line Cup team.
Sharmaine went to the tryouts and was good enough to be selected to play for the Bendigo Pioneer girls at the V/Line Cup carnival in Gippsland.
The carnival was held in September 2017 and the team won both games at Traralgon and Morwell against Goulburn Murray and North East Border.
Sharmaine was named as the best player in both games.
She then tried out for the 2018 TAC Cup Girls Bendigo Pioneers team in November 2017 at Epsom.
In February 2018, Sharmaine was named to the final squad for the Pioneers girls program and has continued training in Epsom to prepare for the season ahead.
She played two practice matches for the team in Wycheproof and Craigieburn.
Sharmaine made her TAC Cup debut on March 3 against the Western Jets in Epsom, with the Pioneers marking the occasion with a victory. The final scores were Bendigo Pioneers 8.12 (60) to Western Jets 3.5 (23).
