Good mate and loyal clubman sadly missed

Rochester United cricketer Matt O’Donoghue was killed in a car accident last week. United captain Tim Bubb penned this emotional tribute to his clubmate and good friend.

AT THE start of the season in B grade, there was a problem with the openers not rotating the strike enough.

It was a directive from the captain that the boys needed to run more singles.

In the next game, Matthew nearly ran his partner out about five times trying to push for singles.

He was just doing what his captain had told him, a real team man.

When I think about Matt, the thing that stands out to me was just how loyal a person he was.

He had time for everyone.

He was the guy who would always stay around to have a drink and a chat with all of his mates after a game.

He was always happy, never had a bad word to say about anyone, and we never had a bad word to say about him.

He was truly a team player, he would do anything in a cricket match to help our team win a game, off the field as well, he would do anything for his teammates.

That’s just the kind of bloke he was.

One of the things I admired about him was how hard he worked.

In the 2015/16 season he played nine games in C grade and seven in B grade.

The next year, it was seven in A grade and six in B grade.

He worked his backside off during the off-season because he wanted to be a better player.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy rise through the ranks like that.

We won the flag that season and, while he didn’t play in the grand final, Matt’s contribution to that side was massive, and we won’t soon forget about it.

He was always really keen to look after the juniors of the club, getting up every Saturday for a joint under 10/under 12 training.

A lot of guys would struggle to be out of bed by 9am on a Saturday.

Not Matt.

He was always there, always helping out.

We are incredibly grateful for all the work he did.

This has been an incredibly hard week for our cricket club.

From our club, we want to thank everyone in our cricketing community for all their support.

The messages of support we have received means a great deal.

We are distraught to have lost such a great person, and a mate to us all.

We send our condolences to Matt’s extended family, we can’t imagine what you are going through at this time.

Matt, you were a dear friend, a great part of our club and someone who means the world to us.

You will be sorely missed.

RIP mate.

— Tim Bubb,

Rochester United captain
