MOST public schools in the district were affected as teachers stopped work on Thursday in a campaign for a pay rise and better working conditions.

Most schools had a large number of staff off, with classes having to be cancelled at some schools.

The day held an extra special significance for Rochester Secondary College teacher and AEU sub-branch member Wayne Park, who was among five people who addressed the 10,000-strong crowd at the stop work rally at Melbourne’s Vodafone Arena.

Mr Park was the only teacher chosen to speak at the rally — the others were union representatives, a principal and a journalist.

He was also the country representative at the rally.

WHILE the finalists are already decided in the Rochester and District Cricket Association B grade competition, the A grade situation is still very interesting.

With only one game to play, only Ramblers are assured of a finals berth.

A grade games to be played next week are Lockington v Ramblers, Colbinabbin v Rovers, Bamawm v Rochester and Toolleen v United.

United and Ramblers played another exciting game on the Windridge oval on Saturday.

Chasing United’s total of 224, Ramblers lost their last wicket just one run short of their target.

SIR — Believing that I have not personally written to thank each of the very many kind sympathisers in the sad loss of my dear son, Gunner Clive J. T. Bunbury, who died of wounds received in action on the 14th Jan last, I would like to ask anyone I may have overlooked to accept my apologies and heartfelt thanks.

I now desire to thank you for your many touching allusions to the sad event made in columns of your valuable paper, and also for your many other manifestations of sympathy, not only as editor of your paper, but also as Vice-President of the Rochester and District Anzac Protection Association, in conjunction with our President (Lieut. H. T. Downe), at the very impressive memorial service held in the Ballendella Public Hall on the 6th Feb last.
