MOTORISTS should be prepared for 15-minute delays as roadworks start on the Northern Hwy.
The Victorian government has invested $5.8 million to build two overtaking lanes on the stretch of road between Rochester and Echuca.
A southbound overtaking opportunity will be built 10km south of Echuca, and a northbound lane will be built 6km north of Rochester.
‘‘We’re improving a key stretch of the Northern Hwy by adding overtaking lanes in each direction between Rochester and Echuca,’’ VicRoads acting regional director, Northern Region Brian Westley said.
‘‘We know this section of road is an important freight and tourist route, that’s why we’re making overtaking easier and safer.’’
Flexible safety barriers will also be installed at the overtaking opportunities to eliminate head on crashes.
Work will continue on various sections of the road, with lane closures and speed reductions in operation while works are completed.
These lanes are due to be open in late 2018.
