65 new cops... but none for us

October 31, 2017

THERE are 65 new police officers to be deployed to regional stations in the coming months.

And not one of those is heading for Rochester.

Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh is once again calling on the Police Minister to station more police in both Rochester and Kyabram.

Mr Walsh said Campaspe should be one of the Police Service Areas (PSAs) to be included in the announcement by the Police Minister.

‘‘Three years of neglect by the Melbourne Labor Government has left the communities of Rochester and Kyabram at the mercy of violence and crime,’’ he said.

‘‘And local media reports clearly indicate that there is no reprieve in sight.

“Residents, particularly elderly residents, are fearful and insecure because of the obvious lack of police coverage in the area.’’

Mr Walsh said ‘‘what we need is more full time police’’.

‘‘Police who are residents in the townships and allocated to the stations permanently,’’ he said.

‘‘Despite a very vocal and active campaign by both communities for additional policing resources this government continues to concentrate its efforts on Melbourne and its fringe growth areas.

‘‘The communities of Rochester, Lockington, Gunbower, Kyabram, Tongala and other outlying areas are under siege and I am again calling on the Police Minister Lisa Neville to act.’’
