THE Andrews Labor Government is adding overtaking lanes on the Northern Highway between Echuca and Rochester to give drivers a quicker, safer journey along the busy freight and tourist route.
Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp announced the $5.8 million investment, which will deliver two new, overtaking lanes around 8km south of Echuca and 3km north of Rochester.
The new lanes will separate passenger and freight vehicles, providing safer overtaking opportunities, improving traffic flow and reducing travel times.
Improving the Northern Highway is vital to Victoria’s farm and freight industries, which use the road to connect with suppliers and other businesses in New South Wales, Bendigo and Melbourne.
There have been nine crashes on this section of the Northern Highway in the past five years, including two as a result of overtaking.
“Overtaking between Echuca and Rochester on the Northern Highway can be difficult – our upgrades will make it easier and safer,’’ said Mr Gepp.
“With passenger, heavy vehicles and farming machinery all using this stretch of road, we are opening up traffic by adding more lanes.
Work on the project will begin in mid-2018.
